Three Lions Coach Explains His Vision: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

In the past, the England assistant coach was playing for Accrington Stanley. Now, his attention is fixed to assist Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy next summer. His path from the pitch to the sidelines commenced with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his calling.

Metoric Climb

His advancement stands out. Beginning with his first major job, he established a reputation through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His stints with teams included Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, he's fully immersed, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.

“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a methodical process that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Passion, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, he and Tuchel test boundaries. The approach feature player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights the England collective and rejects terms like “international break”.

“It's not time off or a rest,” Barry says. “It was vital to establish a setup where players are eager to join and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”

Greedy Coaches

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as extremely driven. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” he declares. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and we dedicate most of our time to. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead of the trends but to surpass them and create our own ones. It’s a constant process to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to clarify complicated matters.

“We get 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We have to play a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. We need to progress from idea to information to understanding to action.

“To create a system that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we must utilize all the time available from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships among them. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”

World Cup Qualifiers

The coach is focusing on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. England have guaranteed their place at the finals after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; instead. This period to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.

“We are both certain that the football philosophy should represent all the positives about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the flexibility, the physicality, the work ethic. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“To make it light, we need to provide a style that allows them to move and run as they do in club games, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information currently. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”

Thirst for Improvement

The coach's thirst to get better is relentless. When he studied for his pro license, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, especially as his class included stars including former players. To enhance his abilities, he entered the most challenging environments available to him to practise giving them. Including a prison in Liverpool, where he also took inmates in a football drill.

He completed the course with top honors, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard included won over and he hired Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that Chelsea removed most of his staff while keeping Barry.

The next manager at Stamford Bridge took over, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he got Barry out of Chelsea to work together again. English football's governing body view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
