The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Inclusion in English Test Series Squad

England have chosen a twelve-player selection just two days before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected place.

The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the tourists will wait until the day of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected squad, showing there are no concerns about their pace bowler’s condition.

The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir makes the starting XI.

Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers

The England coach had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged several past matches.

During these matches, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.

Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.

At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers is still the probable decision.

Alternative Choices Weighed

There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to provide some spin while also bolstering the lower order.

But McCullum has opted to stick with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.

Earlier, Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” he said of slow bowling in matches Down Under.

“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
