The English golfer Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off following a topsy-turvy final round of play.
Rai nailed a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to seal the victory, repeating his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff victory over the same opponent.
Final Round Drama
The champion entered the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 final round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger moved a stroke clear with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final hole.
Play-Off Climax
That set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to take the title and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even better person. To compete alongside him the last two days was really special,” stated Rai, the current world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the present how it is. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Notable Contenders
The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to make up, coming up one shot short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under final round of 62. It was his lowest-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the standings were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
