In a recent interview, the Oscar winner reflected, “During the first Trump administration, I thought I was acting frantically without clear direction. But as we’ve learned, over multiple voting cycles, public figures do not make a difference at all on electoral choices.”

She continued, “So then what am I doing? I’m just voicing my thoughts on something that’s going to worsen tensions tearing the country apart.”

Political Evolution

The actress has previously been open about supporting Republican and Democratic contenders over the years. Raised by a right-leaning family in Kentucky, she cast her ballot for John McCain in the 2008 election before joining the Democratic party and explaining she realized during President Obama’s term that voting Republican was voting against her personal freedoms as a woman.

Previous Comments

Several years ago, she commented that Trump winning the presidency might signal “a disaster” and publicly supported the Democratic candidate in the 2020 election. More recently, she gave her endorsement to Vice President Harris, “as I think she’s a strong contender and I trust that she will do whatever she can to protect women’s health rights.”

Lawrence was supported by most of Hollywood in her rejection of Donald Trump as a candidate for re-election, but the lack of leverage stars have over the voting intentions was emphasized by his election win.

“The second term appears changed,” noted Lawrence regarding his administration. “Since he said what he was going to do. We were aware of his actions for the previous administration. He was explicit. And voters made that decision.”

The actor is highlighting her new film, the filmmaker’s movie in which she portrays a young mom who faces challenges with her mental health in rural Montana. Speaking at a press conference for the project in the film festival, the star spoke about the conflict in Gaza: “I feel fear. It’s devastating. What’s happening is equivalent to a humanitarian crisis and it’s terrible.”

Lawrence added by stating that she was saddened by “the lack of civility in the discourse of the political landscape at present and how that is going to be normalised to the kids now. It’s going to be typical to them that leaders are untruthful.”

She aimed to shift frustration about the conflict to leaders rather than entertainers. “Concentrate on who is responsible,” she said, which was interpreted as a reference to the declaration supported by more than 4,000 arts community members to avoid Israeli film institutions.
