Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is exiting the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a series of emails between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became widely known.
The economist commented in a release that he was "appreciative for the chance to have served, excited about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their progress".
Summers, who previously presided over Harvard University, announced on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released emails showed that Summers communicated with Epstein until the eve of his 2019 arrest for accused trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it accepted the economist's determination to depart.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the Board," the organization stated.
Political Context
This news comes after both chambers of Congress decided on Tuesday to pass a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to release its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will afterward proceed to the desk of President Trump for endorsement. He has said he plans to sign the measure, after reversing his stance on the subject following pushback from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of Epstein-related correspondence made public by the Congressional committee last week mentioned several prominent individuals in the billionaire's past associates, without suggesting any criminal activity by those individuals.
The emails showed that the professor and the financier regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to link the official to notable international personalities.
Personal Response
After the emails were made available with the public, Summers stated he accepted "full responsibility for my poor choice to continue interacting with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he wanted "to rebuild trust and fix connections with the individuals closest to me".
Career Background
Summers held high-level positions under party leaders; serving as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He presided over the university from five years and remains a academic there. When stating his step-down from public duties earlier on this week, he said he would persist with his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following his statement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning research organization in the capital where he was a researcher, confirmed that Summers was ceased to be connected with the group.
Summers entered the directorate of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in last year - following a defeated move to oust its CEO the company leader.
